Stress reduction for laboratory animals

Approximately 1.9 million laboratory animals are still used in Germany every year. Therefore, both a reduction in suffering and an increase in the well-being of laboratory animals (refinement measures) are required in order to achieve a significant improvement in animal welfare for laboratory animals. This requires scientific studies that can be used to determine which changes in housing or experimental conditions contribute effectively to this goal.

The Bf3R compiles existing knowledge on the topic of refinement and makes current scientific knowledge available to the public, the responsible authorities and animal protection committees. The Bf3R works closely with national and international research institutions and the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).
