7th Workshop on the Terminology in Developmental Toxicology
On the Sixth Berlin Workshop on the Terminology in Developmental Toxicology, organized by the BfR and Chartite in Berlin from October 25-27, 2007, the causes of uncertainty and low agreement regarding classification of some fetal observations as malformations or variations had been identified. Furthermore a better knowledge of the adversity and postnatal consequences of fetal observations was considered as the key issue for achieving a substantial reduction in the number of misclassifications and grey zone anomalies.
A new version of the Terminology in Developmental Toxicology was developed by the Teratology Society, the European and the Japanese Teratology Societies and afterwards published in all three Societies’ journals.
The main task of the 7th Workshop is to give an Overview on the efforts to harmonize the terminology of anomalies in developmental toxicology during the Berlin workshops and to discuss the issues identified at previous Workshops:
- problems of postnatal anomalies regarding their integration into new terminology and classification,
- problems occurring during integration of materno-fetal findings into new terminology/classification
Furthermore anomalies specific for dogs, Guinea pigs, primates and quails and identified in experimental studies should be discussed regarding their integration into new terminology and classification.
The results should be implemented in and harmonised for the risk assessment in the framework of different legislations, i.e. plant protection products, biocidal products and REACH.
The workshop is part of an international project in the field of harmonization of terminology in developmental toxicology supported by IPCS.
